El pardal de passa del mes passat continuava a primers de mes a Reus. Un presumible híbrid de xatrac elegant i becllarg va ser vist amb un juvenil al delta del Llobregat el dia 12.7. La segona part del mes va ser força calmada però es va veure una baldriga cendrosa atlàntica el dia 25.7 a mig camí de Catalunya i Balears.

[Last month’s Spanish Sparrow continued at Reus by early July. A presumed hybrid Elegant x Sandwich Tern was seen at Llobregat Delta on 12.7. Second half of the month was very quiet but a Cory’s Shearwater was seen on the 25th]

A Broad Billed Sandpiper  Limicola falcinellus  was seen on 18.7 at Buda Island , PN Delta de l’Ebre (David Bigas, Daniel L Velasco, Pedro J Menéndez, Pablo Fernández, Jorge Valella). A pair of Lesser Crested Terns Thalasseus bengalensis bred that year at PN Delta de l’Ebre, Tarragona (David Bigas). In the same colony an Elegant tern Thalasseus elegans carrying a metal ring also bred  paired to a Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis .By mid July it had a hybrid chick which was trapped and ringed and from which blood samples were taken (David Bigas/PNDE).Seen again on 25.7.2004 (I.Torres, D.Bigas; JL Copete).

The presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret Egretta gularis x garzetta from Ebre Delta Tancada saltpans was seen again on 3.7.2009 (Ricard Gutiérrez). The bird was seen again on 8.7 (Cristian Jensen & Anneray Westerling) and 11.7 (Cristian Jensen). See a photo below (A.Westerling). The bird had been seen intermitently in that spot, and it was relocated on 24.7.2009 again (Ricard Gutiérrez).

The first Saker Falco cherrug  for Catalunya was a juvenile from an Hungarian LIFE project with a satellite transmitter which made its way from Hungary across S Europe to Catalunya and further South to Africa. On 30.7.2009 the bird crossed the border around midday to be radio located at Vall de Camprodón, Ripollés at 13hours. It flew SW to the San Ramón – Calaf area at Segarra county, an area of extensive plains and cereal agriculture where it remained that night. During its second day in Catalunya, it left Lleida plains to head S for the Montblanc area, Conca de Barberà, where it was located at 10 AM but it continued flying this time SW, through the coastal sierras to the Ebre river basin around Flix and Ascó villages, Ribera d’Ebre (13 hours). It continued this time Eastwards, entering the core of Ebro basin steppes at Aragón region, and was recorded at Belchite steppes, S Zaragoza at 19h. It continued through Navarra, La Rioja, and into the S and Africa, where it unfortunately died.

The presumed hybrid Western Reef x Little Egret bird seen intermitently in the Llobregat delta, Barcelona since early 2014 was seen again at Filipines marsh, Remolar-Filipines Nature Reserve, Viladecans, Baix Llobregat on 19.7.2014 (Eio Ramón). See a photo below (Eio Ramón).

The Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus found on 4.6.2014 at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l’Ebre, Montsià, was seen again on 4.7, a month later at the same area (Jordi Martí-Aledo). This bird was seen again on 16.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo).

On 29.7.2014 a Wilson’s Phalarope Phalaropus tricolor, probably a 2cy, was seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l’Ebre, Montsià  (Jordi Martí-Aledo). See a photo below.

There were four Red-necked Phalaropes Phalaropus lobatus in July 2014 at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l’Ebre, Monsià: one on 18-30.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo; Ricard Gutiérrez), see a photo below.

A second bird was found on 23.7 at Filtre verd de les Olles, L’Ampolla, Delta de l’Ebre, Tarragona (Manolo Sánchez Blanch @ornitho.cat). Not seen subsequently. Two more non-juvenile individuals were seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l’Ebre, on 30.7 (Jordi Martí-Aledo, Ricard Gutiérrez).

• Baldriga cendrosa atlàntica / Cory’s Shearwater  Calonectris borealis (n=1)

(1) Tarragonès.  On 25.7 a bird was seen and photographed mid way Tarragonès-Balearic islands, c. 50 nautic miles offshore (Matxalen Pauly). See a photo enclosed.

• Baldriga grisa / Sooty Shearwater  Ardenna grisea (n=1)

(1) Baix Camp.  On 6.7 a bird was reported off L’Hospitalet de l’Infant, Baix Camp from a boat within a Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus group (Juan Ramírez @eBird).

• Presumible híbrid Xatrac Elegant x becllarg / Presumed Elegant x Sandwich Tern hybrid Thalasseus elegans x sandvicensis (n=1)

(1) Baix Llobregat.  On 12.7 and adult showing intermediate bill characters between both species was seen in company of a juvenile at ca l’Arana beach, El Prat de Llobregat, Delta del Llobregat, Baix Llobregat (Ferran López). See a photo below.

•  Graula / Rook Crow Corvus frugileus (n=17)

  

(1-17) Alt Empordà . On 19.7 a group of 17 were seen near Empuriabrava waste treatment plant, Castelló d’Empúries, Alt Empordà (Àlex Ollé). On 26.7 there were five at Mas Bech fields, Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, Alt Empordà (Àlex Ollé @birdingemporda.com) while 12 more (totalling again 17 as on 19.7) were present the same day at Vilabertran – Cabanes (Albert Campsolinas @birdingemporda.com)

• Cornella emmantellada / Hooded Crow Corvus cornix (n=4)

(1-2) Baix Llobregat.  On 3.7 two birds of the group of Sant Boi de Llobregat were seen at Can Dimoni, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Delta del Llobregat, Baix Llobregat (Carlos M.V.@ornitho.cat).

(3) Baix Llobregat.  On 5.7 a bird was seen at Ca l’Arana beach, El Prat de Llobregat, Baix Llobregat (Jaume Campderròs @ornitho.cat). On 14.7 one was at El Prat de Llobregat (Pau Esteban @ornitho.cat).

(4) Barcelonès.  On 24.7 a bird was seen and heard at Parc Güell, Barcelona, Barcelonès (Nikos Mavris @eBird).

•  Pardal de passa / Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis  (n=1)

  

(1) Baix Camp . The bird found on 1.6 at 112 building area, Reus, Baix Camp remained there on 2.7 (Joan Barrachina). See a photo enclosed. The bird was seen again on 6.7 (Enric Pàmies) and on 10.7 (Quique Carballal).
