Destacats / Highlights

Un pardal de passa el dia 1 i un inesperat papamosques menut el dia 5 van ser les cites més rellevants a primers de mes. Al delta de l’Ebre va reaparèixer un adult de martinet dels esculls.

[A Spanish Sparrow on the 1st of June plus an unexpected Red- breasted Flycatcher on the 5th were both early June highlights. An adult Western Reef Heron was present at Ebre delta by late month]

Remember when…

On 19.6 a Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis was accidentally ‘shot’ by a golf ball after a long-range tee shot at a Baix Empordà county golf course. The goose was flying when the ball impacted on it, causing muscle breaking and other traumatisms due to the emergency ‘landing’. The goose, almost certainly of captive origin (E list), was brought to the veterinary and surgery was needed to repair the damage. Since 20.6 is in recovery at the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (contributed by Jordi Martí-Aledo).  See thumbnails enclosed.

The Falcated Teal Anas falcata seen last january at Llobregat delta, Barcelona, oddly reappeared on 30.6 at Bassa dels Pollancres, RN Remolar-Filipines (Pedro Bescós).

An adult Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor was seen at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l’Ebre, on 26.6 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Juan Antonio Lorenzo). This bird was not breeding despite there is a Greater Flamingo colony there and showed no signs of captivity. It had not seen along the whole year (Carles Domingo) so it’s a recent arrival to the area. See a photo below.

The breeding pair of Elegant Terns Thalasseus elegans seen in late May at Ebre delta within a Sandwich Tern colony and attending a nest presumably continued in that restricted area in June. They remained there during the first half of the month (Carles Domingo) but they were not in the colony, already with chicks, on 26.6 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Juan Antonio Lorenzo) so either they deserted the colony or the breeding failed this month. Perhaps the Barcelona bird was one of these (ed. comment).  On 6.6.2009 one of these birds was seen fishing along Llobregat delta beach at El Prat de Llobregat, Barcelona (Xavier Larruy, Raul Bastida).
