El febrer comença amb bons nombres de gavians rars i escassos, amb algunes de les rareses hivernants encara presents. Hi ha dues cueretes endolades la segona meitat de mes i també un pinsà carminat al Montsià.

[February begins with good numbers of scarce gulls, with some wintering rarities still around. There are two Pied Wagtails the 2nd half of the month and a Common Rosefinch too]

 

Remember when…

 

  • Fa 15 anys / 15 years ago

The 2 adult Bewick Swans Cygnus columbianus at fields near Castell del Remei, Lleida found on 26.1.2004 were still there on 1.2 (Arnau Sebé) The birds are moving along the Linyola area and on 6.2 they were at La Panosa area, within Linyola town council (Arnau Sebé). Still thre on 8.2 (E.Farré).On 14.2 they were relocated again at La Panosa area, Linyola, Lleida (Arnau Sebé)Still visible at the same area on 19.2 (Rafa Armada). See a photo below. On 22.2 they were seen again while they left the area in the evening to an unknown roost (Arnau Sebé; Enric Farré). Last seen on 29.2 (Marc Peris, Helena Giralt).

The male Falcated Teal Anas falcata was seen at l’Encanyissada area, delta de l’Ebre where one seen from 6-16.1 on 1.2 (P.Feliu, J.Sargatal, H.Mas, C.Ginés et al).There are two males. The Llobregat delta bird, seen in 17.1 has not left the area since then and was still at La Ricarda lagoon where initially found, on 10.2 (Xavier Sampere/RN Delta del Llobregat). In the meantime, the Encanyissada bird was seen there on 8.2 (D.Bigas, K.de Dios, J.Cañada, G.Ocio, I.Torres).

On 28.2 a Lesser Yellowlegs Tringa flavipes (Steve West) and 29.2 (Eva Solanes, Maria, Eladi Ribes, Enric Farré) was seen  at Clot de la Unilla, Lleida. See a photo below (Eva Solanes).

On 7.2 the Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus that was overwintering in the Ebre Delta and was present at least since september 2003 (David Bigas) was seen at El Fangar , Delta de l’Ebre, Tarragona (D.Bigas, K.de Dios, J.Cañada, G.Ocio, I.Torres).

 

  • Fa 10 anys / 10 years ago

The White Pelican Pelacanus onocrotalus that had remained at Lleida all the winter long,  left the area and was seen heading north again: it was seen again at the place where it entered Catalonia from France, PN Aiguamolls de l’Empordà on 12.1.2009 (Teresa Montràs, Madhav Singh, Jordi Martí-Aledo).

There were five Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans reported: a 1w at Solius dump on 14.2.2009 and two more on 15.2.2009 (Carlos Álvarez Cros), a 1w at Diagonal Mar urban park, Barcelona on 15.2.2009 (Quique Carballal) and a 1w/1s on 26.2 at Vilanova i la Geltrú beach, Garraf (Xesco Macià, Quique Carballal, Xavier Larruy).See a photo below (X.Macià)

The first Iceland Gull Larus glaucoides for Catalunya, a 1w,  was found on 4.2.2009 at Cambrils harbour, Baix Camp (Joan Ferrer, Joan Manuel Ferrer, Albert Cama, Matxalen Pauly, Martí Rodríguez, Marc Gálvez, Julio Merayo, Camil Albert, Oriol Clarabuch, Raül Aymí, Màrius Domingo, Edu Gracia). See a photo below. It was seen again on 5.2 (Albert Cama ; Rafael Armada; Ferran López and others) and again on 6.2 (Edu Gracia Tinedo) and 9.2 (Albert Cama, Dani Mañas, Miquel Casas et al.). Not seen on 14.2.Presumably moved to l’Ametlla de Mar (Pere Josa).

There were three presumed hybrid egrets in February 2014, two of them long-stayers: one at Poble Nou, Delta de l’Ebre on 5.2.2014 (Matxalen Pauly, Albert Cama), another at Can Dimoni, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Baix Llobregat on 21.2 (Carlos López @ornitho.cat) and another at Les Olles, L’Ampolla, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre on 22.2.2014 (Manolo Sánchez Blanch @ornitho.cat).

The Pacific Golden Plover Pluvialis fulva found on 28.8 at grassfields near Migjorn, Sant Jaume d’Enveja, Delta de l’Ebre, Montsià which had been seen during autumn – winter 2013 was seen again on 2.2.2014 at Migjorn, Sant Jaume d’Enveja (Josep Tantull, Roser Solé).

On 28.2.2014 three Siberian Chiffchaffs Phylloscopus collybita tristis were trapped and ringed at Remolar – Filipines lagoon, Viladecans, Baix Llobregat (Joan Castelló).

  • Oca de bec curt / Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus (n=1)

(1) Alt Empordà. The unknown origin bird first seen on 26.6.2018 at La Gallinera, Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, Alt Empordà, then in other parts of the park by el Matà area remained presumably into February in the area. Seen again on 7.2 (Joan Ventura @ornitho.cat).

  • Cigne cantaire / Whooper Swan  Cygnus cygnus (n=1)

(1) Barcelonès. Then adult that landed exhausted in downtown Barcelona on 10.1 remained in recovery process on 1.3 (CRFS Torreferrussa) and on 8.2 (CRFS Torreferrussa).

  • Èider / Eider Somateria mollissima (n=2)

(1-2) Baix Ebre The adult drake and the subadult found some time ago were seen again from El Goleró, Deltebre on 14.2 (Cristian Jensen, Pau Garcia Campderròs). Seen again on 16.2 (Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra; Ricard Gutiérrez, Emma Guinart, Juanjo Bazán, Mika Palmer, Mabel Gutiérrez, Amaya Caperochipi, Javier Subirats, Sergi Sales, Patricia Faura, Joan Carrasco, Deborah Fandos, Maria Martín, David Acosta, Vanessa Cadenas, Manolo Sánchez Blanch).   • Cabussó orellut / Slavonian Grebe Podiceps auritus  (n=3)

 (1)  Baix Ebre. The bird reported from L’Ampolla was seen again on 6.2 (Manolo Sánchez Blanch) and 7.2 (Manolo Sánchez Blanch; Xavier Subirats). Possibly this same bird was seen off El Goleró, Deltebre on 14.2 (Cristian Jensen, Pau Garcia Campderròs). On 16.2 there were first one (Sergi Carreras), record shot enclosed, then two off L’Ampolla (Guillermo Rodríguez, Martí Franch), perhaps birds (1) and (2) or new individuals.The two birds were seen again on 18.2 (Xavier Parra @ornitho.cat) and one was present on 22.2 (Manolo Sánchez Blanch @ornitho.cat).

(2)  Baix Ebre. A bird was seen from platja de la Marquesa, Deltebre, on 7.2 (Xavier Subirats).

(3)  Montsià. A bird was seen at Badia dels Alfacs, from El Trabucador sandbar, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Montsià on 10.2 (José Guerra, Marc Gàlvez, Matxalen Pauly; Josep Tantull, Roser Solé). This bird was seen again on 16.2 (Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra; Sergi Sales and others).

 

  • Gavinot / Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus (n=3)

(1) Alt Empordà. The 1w found on 23.12.2018 at Pedret i Marzà dump, Alt Empordà was seen again on 2.2.2019 (Joan Goy), see a photo enclosed.

(2) Baix Llobregat. The 1w found on 30.1 at Llobregat river under Nelson Mandela bridge, El Prat de Llobregat, Baix Llobregat, was seen again on 1.2 morning (Ferran López) and 4.2 morning (Ferran López) and 10.2 morning (Antonio Rodríguez Sinovas).

(3) Pla de l’Estany. The bird seen last month at Banyoles lake was seen again on 2.2 (J. Faus, R.Prat) and on 6.2 to 10.2 (Gerard Dalmau; Hubert Mas @ornitho.cat), see a photo below. Seen again on 11.2 (Daniel Roca @ornitho.cat) and 13.2 and 17.2 (Gerard Dalmau) ..

  • Gavià argentat de potes roses / Herring Gull  Larus argentatus (n= 14)

(1) Alt Empordà. On 2.2 an adult was seen at Pedret dump, Pedret i Marzà, Alt Empordà (Joan Goy).

(2) Baix Ebre. The 2w found on 8.1 at Les Olles mouth, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre was seen again on 1.2 (Quim Minoves, David Bigas).

(3) Baix Ebre. The 2w was seen on 30.1 at El Goleró area, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre was seen again at the same place on 1.2 and 2.2 (Quim Minoves).

(4) Baix Ebre. A 4w was found at El Goleró area, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre on 1.2 (Quim Minoves, David Bigas). Seen at the same place on 2.2 (Quim Minoves) and on 3.2 (Manolo Sánchez Blanch).

(5) Baix Ebre. A 2w red PVC ringed was found at Los Bascos ricefields, Deltebre, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre, on 3.2 afternoon (David Bigas). This bird was seen agaon on 11.2 near another red ringed PVC bird (!!) (David Bigas).

(6) Baix Ebre. A new 1w was seen at El Goleró, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre on 3.2 (David Bigas).

(7) Pla de l’Estany. A 2 cy was seen at the southern part of Estany de Banyoles, Pla de l’Estany, on 9.2 (Guillem Saguer @ornitho.cat). Seen again on 10.2 with a 2nd bird (Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat) and on 16.2 too (Guillem Saguer @ornitho.cat) to 17.2 (Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat). A bird was seen at Banyoles lake on 21.2 (Irene Barnosell, Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat) and 22-23.2 (Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat).

(8) Montsià. A 3w with moulted coverts but retaining a couple of banded tail feathers, dark alula and 3w outer wing pattern, spotted head and dark bill tip was seen at El Trabucador sandbar, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Delta de l’Ebre,Montsià on 10.2 (Ricard Gutiérrez, Helena Arbonés). See photos below. This is the same bird seen on 2.12.2018 at Punta de la Banya, Delta de l’Ebre (David Bigas). Compare the below photos with one from December 2018 here. This bird was seen again on 17.2 at Punta de la Banya beach (David Bigas).

(9-11) Tarragonès.  Three were relocated within Tarragona harbour on 10.2: the adult, the 2nd winter and a 1w (Raül Aymí @ornitho.cat). The adult, the 2w and a 1 were seen again on 13.2 (Camilo Albert @ornitho.cat). A 2cy was seen off the Tarragona harbour on 23.2 (Albert Cama, Xavier Parra, Camil Albert, Montse Gutiérrez et al @ornitho.cat).

(12) Pla de l’Estany. A 2nd bird seen at Estany de Banyoles, Pla de l’Estany on 10.2 with bird (7) (Gerard Dalmau). See a photo of one of the birds enclosed. This bird or another was seen at Puigpalter dump on 21.2 (Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat).

(13) Baix Ebre. A second  2w red PVC ringed bird was found betwen El Goleró and Les Olles, Deltebre-L’Ampolla, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre, on 11.2 afternoon near the bid (5) which was there too (!!) (David Bigas)..

(14) Montsià. A 2w, probably the same seen on 8.12.2018 but with a more advanced moult stage, was seen at Punta de la Banya beach, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Delta de l’Ebre, Montsià (David Bigas).

  • Gavià Caspi / Caspian Gull  Larus cachinnans  (n=3)

(1) Tarragonès.  A clàssic 1w was seen and photographed at Tarragona harbour, Tarragonès, on 7.2 (Camilo Albert), see two photos below.

(2) Osona.  A 1w  was seen at Puig-neró roofs, Roda de Ter, Osona, on 10.2 (Martí Franch, Jordi Faus @ornitho.cat).

(3) Pla de l’Estany. A 2cy was seen at Puigpalter dump, Porqueres, Pla de l’Estany on 13.2 (Joan Goy @ornitho.cat). This bird was seen at Banyoles lake on 16.2 (Guillem Saguer @ornitho.cat) and 17.2 (Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat). Seen again on 22.2 (Gerard Dalmau @ornitho.cat).

 

  • Botxí d’Estepa / Steppe Grey Shrike Lanius pallidirostris  (n=1)

 (1) Montsià. The 2nd for Catalunya, a 1w presumed female found on 22.11.2018 at Tancada marshes, Amposta, Delta de l’Ebre, Montsià remained there on 1.2 (Quim Minoves; Miquel Rafa). Seen again on 5.2 (Màrius Domingo; Marc Gàlvez). Seen also on 9.2 (Xavier Riera; Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra; Ricard Gutiérrez, Helena Arbonés et al). See a photo below (Ricard Gutiérrez). Seen again on 10.2 (Xavier Parra @ornitho.cat) and 12.2 (Hubert Mas, Daniel de Sousa @ornitho.cat; Rafa Armada, see a photo below). The  bird was seen again on 16.2 at camí dels Baladres (Ricard Gutiérrez, Emma Guinart) and later in the area (Lluís Toldrà; Diego Callau @ornitho.cat).   •  Graula / Rook Crow Corvus frugileus (n=4)

(1-3) Alt Empordà . There were four at Vilafant, Alt Empordà on 5.2 (Albert Campsolinas @birdingemporda.com). There were two at Figueres on 11.2 (Ricard Font @ornitho.cat) and 4 at El Far d’Empordà, Alt Empordà (Narcis Garriga @birdingempordà.com). One was at Figueres on 20.1 (Ricard Font @ornitho.cat) and two also there on 22.2 (Manel Barrios, Àlex Ollé @birdingempordà.com). Four were at El Far d’Empordà on 27-28.2 (Narcís Garriga @ornitho.cat).

 

  • Cornella emmantellada / Hooded Crow Corvus cornix (n=5)

(1-5) Baix Llobregat. The four birds were seen near the place where the 1st know nest in Iberia was found: there were 4 at Av 11 de Setembre, El Prat on 6.2 (Ramon Ruiz-Jarillo), see a photo below, and 10.2 (Víctor Iglesias), see four photos below. One bird, which seems  not to be part of these four below was seen at Viladecans, Baix Llobregat, on 10.2 too (Daniel Jiménez @ornitho.cat). On 16.2 there were two at Mercabarna bridge, El Prat de Llobregat (Xavier Parra @ornitho.cat). On 19.2 there were four at Nelson Mandela bridge, El Prat de Llobregat (Jordi Ruestes @ornitho.cat) and two on 20.2 (Roger Guillem @ornitho.cat) and four on 21-22.2 (Ferran López @ Llobregat Delta bird news blog). On 28.2 there were two at Cal Nani, El Prat de Llobregat (Pau Esteban @ornitho.cat).

  • Garsa blava / Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cooki (n=1)

(1) Alt Empordà. A bird was seen at Llançà, Alt Empordà on 2.2 (Jaume Caball), see a record shot included. It’s a bird seen two weeks ago in the area, of unknown origin (Miguel Hidalgo). The species is not included in the Catalan list of this website so far.Seen again on 4.2 and 6.2 (Ponç Feliu @ornitho.cat) to 7.2 (Albert Burgas, Anna Planella @ornitho.cat) and 9.2 (Oriol Clarabuch, Miquel Àngel Lucena @ornitho.cat).Seen again on 12.2 (Vero Cortés @ornitho.cat) and 13.2 (Joan Ventura @ornitho.cat). On 15.2 (Ponç Feliu) and 16.2 (Oscar Bargalló @ornitho.cat) it remained there.

 

  • Mosquiter de doble ratlla / Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus (n=1)

(1) Alt Empordà. A bird was seen at Roses, Alt Empordà, on 27.2 (Jordi Bermejo @ornitho.cat).

 

  • Mosquiter de Hume / Hume’s Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus humei (n=1)

(1) Baix Llobregat. A bird, perhaps a new individual, was found calling at Barris garden center, Gavà, on 14.2 (Ferran López, Sergi Bosch), see a picture enclosed. Still there later in the afternoon (Rafa Armada). Seen again on 15.2 (Josep Crusafont @ornitho.cat). Seen again on 20.2 (Roger Guillem @ornitho.cat) and 22.2 (Joan  Padró).

 

  • Estornell rosat / Rosy Starling Pastor roseus (n=1)

(1) Tarragonès. On 17.2 a bird was found within Tarragona harbour, Tarragonès (Raül Aymí @ornitho.cat).

 

  • Siberian Stonechat Saxicola maurus (n=1)

(1) Montsià The female found on 5.1 at Tancada marshes, Delta de l’Ebre, Montsià was seen again on 9.2 (Xavier Riera) and 10.2 (Xavier Parra @ornitho.cat) despite it proves quite elusive to would-like-to-ne observers. Seen again on 12.2 (Hubert Mas, Daniel de Sousa @ornitho.cat).

 

  • Cuereta citrina / Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola (n=1)

(1) Baix Ebre. The bird found near Los Bascos, Deltebre, Delta de l’Ebre, Baix Ebre comarca on 31.1 was still around on 3.2 (Xavier Subirats), see a back of the camera photo included. On 5.2 it was still there (Marc Gàlvez) and on 8.2 too (Jana Marco, Oriol Palau) to 9.2 (Sergi Sales; José Guerra, Marc Gàlvez; Ricard Gutiérrez, Helena Arbonés; Cristian Jensen et al).   • Cuereta blanca endolada / Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba yarrellii (n=2)

(1) Montsià. There was a male near Lo Passador bridge, Sant Jaume d’Enveja, Montsià on 16.2 (Marc Gàlvez, José Guerra), see two photos below (Marc Gàlvez).

  • Piula grossa / Richard’s Pipit  Anthus richardi (n=3)

(1-3) Alt EmpordàOn 13.2 there were at least still three at Can Comes meadows, PN Aiguamolls d el’Empordà, Alt Empordà  (Àlex Ollé).

 

  • Pinsà carminat / Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrynus (n=1)

(1) Montsià. From 18-20.2 a 1w Common Rosefinch was found at Alcanar, Montsià (Pedro Trujillo). See images enclosed.
